The Hearing Loss Nobody Warns You About

Up to 60% of hair salon workers have some degree of hearing loss. A single dryer already sits at the occupational limit, and unlike your back, this one does not recover. What is actually happening, and what to do about it.

This industry has finally started talking about bodies. Posture, the hunch, the twist, wrists, eyes. All of it real, all of it worth the attention it is getting.

Nobody talks about hearing.

Which is remarkable, because the numbers are worse than almost anything else on that list — and unlike a sore back, this one does not get better on a Sunday.

The number

Up to 60% of hair salon workers experience some degree of hearing loss from daily exposure to multiple dryers running at once.

Six in ten. Read that again with the knowledge that noise-induced hearing loss is permanent. There is no rest day, no stretch and no physiotherapist that reverses it. The hair cells in the inner ear that respond to sound do not regenerate. Whatever you lose, you have lost.

It is the most under-discussed occupational risk in this trade, and it is more common than the back problems everyone does discuss.

Why a salon is genuinely loud

The recommended occupational limit is 85 decibels as an eight-hour time-weighted average. Long or repeated exposure at or above that level causes hearing loss. That threshold is not disputed.

Now the tools. A hair dryer measures roughly 80 to 90 dB at about a metre. Dryers, clippers and shavers frequently register 90 to 95 dB.

So a single dryer, at arm's length, is already at or above the limit. And you are not holding it a metre away — you are holding it considerably closer, for a substantial share of every day, in a room where somebody else is very likely running one too.

The decibel scale is also not linear, which is the part that catches people out. It is logarithmic: every increase of about 3 dB represents a doubling of sound energy. So the gap between an 85 dB dryer and a 95 dB one is not "a bit louder" — it is roughly ten times the energy going into your ear. That is why equipment choice matters far more than it intuitively should.

The room is making it worse

Salons are built from precisely the materials that reflect sound. Tile and vinyl because they mop. Mirror because the work requires it. Glass at the front for retail. Laminate because it survives. Every one of those is acoustically hard, and hard surfaces do not absorb sound — they return it.

Most salons are also rectangular, which means parallel walls. Sound bounces between two parallel hard surfaces repeatedly before it decays, and that lingering tail is reverberation. In a reverberant room every sound stays in the air longer, so sounds overlap — the dryer is still ringing when the next one starts — and the overall level climbs even though nothing individually got louder.

Then the compounding effect: in a loud room everybody raises their voice to be heard, which raises the room level, which makes everybody raise their voice again. Acousticians call it the Lombard effect, and you have experienced it in every loud bar you have left with a sore throat. In a salon it runs for eight hours.

What to actually do

Four levers, roughly in order of how much they help.

1. Quieter equipment

The single highest-leverage change, because of that logarithmic scale. Quieter dryers genuinely exist and the difference is not marginal. If you are replacing equipment anyway, ask for the noise specification — most suppliers will not volunteer it, and the fact that they have to look it up tells you something.

This is also the one that protects your whole team at once, without anybody having to remember to do anything.

2. Soften the room

Absorption reduces the reverberant build-up, which lowers the level everyone is working in.

Treat at ear height, not just overhead. The common mistake is putting something on the ceiling and stopping. Most of your sound is generated at standing and seated head height and travels horizontally. Curtains, upholstered panels, fabric-wrapped board, felt, cork, a heavy textile hanging — anything soft on a vertical surface between one and two metres up does more than the same material on the ceiling.

Break up the parallel walls. Fluted or slatted timber, open shelving with irregular contents, a curtain along one wall, a large plant. Anything that scatters rather than reflects interrupts the back-and-forth bounce.

Something soft underfoot where you can. Full carpet is not realistic on a colour floor. A rug in the waiting area or under a reception desk is, and floor is a large surface.

3. Distance and time

Sound falls off sharply with distance, so small changes in how you hold a dryer matter more than they feel like they should. So does turning it off between sections rather than letting it run in your hand.

Exposure is cumulative across the day, which means it is the total that counts, not any single blast. Spacing out the blow-dries in a day, where the diary allows, genuinely reduces the dose.

4. Actual hearing protection

Nobody wants to wear foam plugs behind the chair, and you do not have to. Musicians' earplugs — sometimes sold as high-fidelity or filtered plugs — reduce level fairly evenly across frequencies rather than muffling everything. The point is that speech stays intelligible. You can still hold a conversation with a client while wearing them, which is the entire objection people have to hearing protection in a client-facing job.

They are inexpensive off the shelf and can be custom-moulded if you want to spend more. For a career this is not a large amount of money.

The signs, and why they are easy to miss

Noise-induced loss is gradual, painless, and typically takes the high frequencies first — which is why people do not notice it as "going deaf". They notice it as everything sounding slightly muddier.

What to watch for: tinnitus, ringing or hissing after a shift, especially if it lingers into the evening. Struggling to follow conversation in a noisy room while being fine one-to-one. Turning the television up. Asking people to repeat themselves more than you used to. And the tell that people dismiss most readily — a feeling of muffled hearing at the end of a working day that clears overnight. That temporary shift is not harmless; it is the early warning, and repeated often enough it stops being temporary.

If any of that is familiar, get a baseline hearing test. Not because something is necessarily wrong, but because a baseline is the only way to know later whether anything has changed. Audiologists do this routinely for people in loud trades and it is a short appointment.

If you employ people

Worth being direct: in most jurisdictions, workplace noise exposure is an employer responsibility, not a personal choice your staff make individually. If your floor runs above 85 dBA as an eight-hour average — and on the figures above, a busy hair floor very plausibly does — then assessment, equipment and protection sit with you.

Check your own province or state, because the specific duties and thresholds vary. But do not assume that because nobody has raised it, it does not apply.

The short version

A single dryer is already at the occupational limit. Two are well past it. The room you work in amplifies rather than absorbs, and the damage accumulates silently over years without ever hurting.

Buy the quieter dryer. Put something soft on a vertical surface at head height. Turn it off between sections. Get a pair of filtered earplugs and a baseline test.

You will replace your beds, your flooring and probably your premises. Your hearing is not on that list.
